The late Nick Davies (who was a dentist) used the material used for taking
dental impressions, which was an alginate of some sort.  It proved extremely
successful.   

He was even heard on one occasion to utter the words "open wide" as he
applied the substance to the bell!

casting compounds used for the recovery of footwear and toolmarks which 
would be excellent for the job
