Philip,

The basic details of the pre-1903 ring at Redcliffe were as follows:

  1 1872 Mears & Stainbank 28 6.1. 7 F#

  2 1872 Mears & Stainbank 30½ 6.3. 0 E

  3 1823 Thomas Mears II 31½ 6.3.15 D#

  4 1823 Thomas Mears II 33 7.3. 0 C#

  5 1698 Abraham Rudhall I 35½ 10.0.14 B

  6 1698 Abraham Rudhall I 37¼ 10.2.21 A#

  7 1763 Thomas Bilbie II 40¼ 12.3. 2 G#

  8 1763 Thomas Bilbie II 43¼ 15.0. 7 F#

  9 1763 Thomas Bilbie II 46 17.2. 7 E

10 1763 Thomas Bilbie II 50¼ 22.0.15 D#

11 1622 Roger Perdue I 54½ 27.0.23 C#

12 1622 Roger Perdue I 62½ 39.0. 0 B

The weights are the “as received” weights recorded at Taylors in 1903. The
diameters were recorded by Taylors in 1887 when they did some rehanging
work.

The inscriptions are given in “Ellacombe”. There are a number of references
to Redcliffe in The Bell News, and there was also an article on the bells in
the RW in the 1960s. I’m happy to send you any of these items off-list if
you would like, though I’m sure some of the eminent bell historians on this
list – in particular David Cawley – are likely to have much more information
than I.

Does anybody have any details of the previous peals at St Mary Redcliffe,
and or any other information of any historical interest, ideally from before
the 1903 re-casting?

Philip.
