The above page has a picture part way down with a very clear example of a straight slider – the clapper misses by miles!  Unusually there are some datable fittings in this tower.
I have recently discovered a shaped slider (probably of 1827) at Holy Trinity Ripon which was designed to allow the clapper to just miss it but which is not steam bent.
