I found today, in the Westminster Archives Centre, the real story of the destruction of the bells during WW2.

The bells were lowered into the porch. The plan was to bury them in sand to protect them in case the church was bombed.

But before it was possibly to bury the bells, the church was burned down. The bells were buried under burning beams and cracked.
