[Bell Historians] Joanna Hille

Certainly the Hille bell now in the glass tower at Basildon did come from St Nicholas, Colchester, demolished in 1952. For years it and its five companions languished amidst the shrubbery and vegetation of the old back foundry area at Whitechapel – amongst others the five from Aveley and the old ten from St Magnus.

There has been quite lengthy discussion – during David Bryant’s moderatorship – on this site concerning Joanna Hille aka Joanna Sturdy, not least as to whether she was the same lady. The late Nick Davies has certainly written extensively on the subject during his researches into Faversham Abbey.

It may be the same bell, but I think Basildon has a bell (tenor?) cast by Joanna Hille. That came from a church in Colchester.
