Thanks to David Willis for kick-starting this one, but as I've been gradually assembling biographies of all the main bell historians over the years it was good to have an initial identification for Poppleton from the 1901 census. I've done a further search on Ancestry, and here’s a potted history of his family life

 

Birth registration, James Eyre Poppleton in Bradford registration district, Jan-March quarter 1861

 

Baptism at Bradford St.Peter (now Bradford Cathedral) on 14 February 1861 of James Eyre Poppleton (born 24 January 1861) son of Joe William and Elizabeth Poppleton of Horton, surgeon

 

In 1861 census at 30 Little Horton Lane, Little Horton (St.John), Bradford, with parents Joe Poppleton (46, born Almondbury) MRSLE [?], LACL, Certifying Surgeon of Factories, and Elizabeth (37, born Liversedge), sister Edith Mary (5, born Bradford), listed as James Ezra (sic)  (6 months, born Bradford), and a nurse

 

In 1871 census as scholar at The Parsonage, Markington with Wallerthwaite, Yorks, in the household of the Vicar of Markington, John S. Tute, as James E. Poppleton (10, born Bradford), pupil

 

In 1881 census at The Grange, Newlay, Horsforth (St.Margaret), with parents Joe Poppleton (55, born Almondbury), certifying surgeon of Factories, Bradford, FRCS, CAC, and Elizabeth (57, born Liversedge), listed as James E. (20, born Bradford), solicitors articled clerk

 

Father Joe Poppleton of Newlaiths Grange, Horsforth, surgeon, died 25 July 1882, probate 13 September 1882 at Wakefield by two of the executors, John Eyre Williamson of 5 Heaton Gove, Shipley, oil merchant, and James Eyre Poppleton of Horsforth, solicitor’s clerk, the son, personal estate £6500.17.8.

 

Marriage at St.John the Evangelist, Upper Hopton, Yorks, 10 July 1888. James Eyre Poppleton (27, bachelor, of Walkley, Sheffield, son of Joe William Poppleton, surgeon) and Bertha Howgate (28, spinster, of the Vicarage, Upper Hopton, daughter of Edward Smith Howgate, Woollen Manufacturer, after banns. Witnesses Edwd. S. Howgate and R. Williamson

 

In 1891 census at 189 Spring Vale Road, Nether Hallam, Sheffield, as James E. Poppleton (30, born Bradford), solicitor, with wife Bertha (31, born Dewsbury) and son Bernard E. (1, born Sheffield), and a servant

 

In 1901 Census at West House, Tanshelf, Pontefract (St.Giles), Yorkshire, as James E. Poppleton (40, born Bradford), solicitor (employer), with wife Bertha (41, born Dewsbury), daughters Margaret E. (7, born Pontefract) and Mary E. (1 month, born Pontefract), and two servants

 

In 1911 census at West House (15 rooms), Ackworth Road, Pontefract, as James Eyre Poppleton (50, born Bradford), solicitor (employer), with wife (married 22 years) Bertha Eyre (51, born Dewsbury), son Bernard Eyre (21, born Sheffield), solicitor’s articled clerk, daughters Margaret Eyre (18, born Pontefract), student (at home) and Mary Eyre (10, born Pontefract), school, and wife’s father Edward Smith Howgate (widower, 78, born Dewsbury), retired woollen manufacturer, and two servants

 

Probate calendar 1925. James Eyre Poppleton of West House, Pontefract, Yorkshire, died 11 May 1925. Probate London 16 June to Bernard Eyre Poppleton, solicitor, and Mary Eyre Poppleton, spinster. Effects £4194.0.9, re-sworn £4767.15.3.

 

Nothing yet, though, to indicate why or how he became interested in bells (the introduction or preface to his West Yorkshire survey just says that he set himself to work on the bells in 1879 or 1880). His survey is, it’s worth saying, an excellent record for the area.
