I know these casts very well! I do hope Taylors archives might be able to house them. There is a book of rubbings as wekk but they may have retained that.Andrew

In 1894 Poppleton made a number of plaster casts of letters, badges and
stops etc. from bells across the West Riding of Yorkshire. Many of these
were used to illustrate articles published in vols. XVI and XVII of The
Yorkshire Archaeological Journal and can be found on-line and I believe
many will have been reproduced again in other works. I am sure bell
historians will know of him; I have seen him mentioned in George
Dawson's book on the Sheffield Diocese bells.

The original casts made by Poppleton in 1894 have just come into my
possession; along with his handwritten index. They were in danger of
being dumped but the Yorkshire Archaeological & Historical Society
contacted the Doncaster & District Society of Change Ringers as a last
ditch attempt to find them a home. The YAHS is moving offices and can no
items and are very dirty. Many have been painted over and some are
damaged. I suspect that our small ringing society will not wish to
retain them as we also do not have anywhere to keep them; but we could
not see them dumped; thus my trip to Leeds this morning. I am prepared
to keep them myself if a suitable long-term secure home for them is not
found.

I have thoughts of finding an appropriate museum place for these items;
the obvious course being to offer them to Loughborough, but I would like
first to know of any thoughts on the matter that members of this list
can offer. I am curious as to whether they are seen as historically
significant in themselves (some relate to bells that are lost) or of
value in Bell History circles; given that the casts are all well
documented. Poppleton's approach seems to have been to make casts of
just a few letters from an inscription as an example of the style and
there are few complete words, much less complete inscriptions.
