Since raising my question about Godalming bells I have been interested
to see the variety of views expressed by members of c-r and
Bell-Historians on the subject of recasting; what it actually means and
how it should be reflected in inscriptions. I have now sent a letter,
(along the same lines as my original to the lists), to the editor of
Ringing World for possible publication. If it is used I would be
delighted if those who have responded on the e-lists might consider
doing the same in RW. It is always good to see discussions such as this,
which I think may be of fairly wide interest in the RW letters page and
our dear old comic deserves such support. For the avoidance of doubt I
have nothing but admiration for the superb achievement at Godalming and
I am interested only in the point about historical accuracy, not in
casting aspersions at Godalming, (and certainly not re-casting them).

Cross-posted to c-r and historians.

Thanks,

Ted
