I didn’t chip in to this at first as I didn’t want to question Gareth’s reading of the entry, but I must admit my first reaction was “does it really say that?” Now Mark Ockelton has indicated that there is a published version of the accounts, I think it is time to suggest that this really quite important entry needs double-checking at source – if the original accounts still exist, that is.

I’ll be happy to take a look at the entry if someone can send a digital photograph (I’m a qualified archivist and trained palaeographer). I rather doubt the reading “Vandalls”, anyway.

On the question of 18s and xviijs I’d add that I've noted many times that it was in the 1620s that the use of Roman numerals switched to the ‘modern form’ of Arabic for accounting purposes – quite often with a bit of inter-mixing in the transition period. I’ve been slightly curious about this for some time, wondering if there was some particular reason for the change – or if it was just fashion. If the latter, it is certainly quite striking that the change took place right across the country at about the same time (certainly within that decade).

Interesting all round!
