I agree, this must remain a free website and if that means the information
is limited to the current categories, then so be it.

The whole online project has been a labour of love for the benefit of all
ringers put together by a groups of volunteers who have worked tirelessly to
achieve a high level of accuracy, for which we are all most grateful.

There are a lot of people who have contributed to on-line Dove over the past
20 years on the understanding the information is freely available.

Should that continue? Should it become a members on or subscription service?

Or, as for many resources, should there be a limited scope or limited time
free access, then a paid for service?

After all, what would this cost to retain if it was not maintained by
volunteers?

One of the brilliant features of Dove is that it is completely free for the
user. Adding even one feature would mean a potential adding of several
thousand pieces of data. More importantly, they would have to be kept up to
date. This came into stark focus a couple of years ago, when there was a
feature in The Ringing World about ringing restarting at Buckfast Abbey.
Nobody in the preceding three years had informed Dove that ringing had been
suspended!

Any additional information that is added to Dove must not put too much onto
the shoulders of those that provide this free resource. Its benefit must
outweigh its costs.
