I guess it provides a focal point for their appeal (see attached - if they
come through).
 
Bit like West Tytherley: "oldest bell hung for full-circle ringing".

I have told them this. Withycombe tenor is my prime suspect. 

They even offered to weigh Brough tenor to prove the fact, but I pointed out
that they had better weigh the others too if they wanted proof!

Tuning wise - it should hopefully be possible to sharpen the 3rd
sufficiently to bring them into a major key, whilst leaving the tenor
untuned.

"Heaviest ring of four" is a moot point - none of the heavy ones have exact
weights (and I don't think there's certainly about the weight for East
Quantoxhead either). My guess - if the 46.5" diameter at Brough is right -
that it will be considerably lighter than supposed.
 
So is the claim really a sufficient argument against augmentation?
