An article from "Inside Croydon" presents a detailed account of the early history of the Gillett clock works and a less detailed account of its later history.

But it left me with a few questions, which I hope you folks might be able to answer.
1. When was the family name of Johnstone changed to Johnston?
2. Are there any surviving examples or photographs of the chiming machine that Gillett first displayed in 1867, in which "the wooden barrel could be played using one’s fingers"?
