Subject: [Bell Historians] Liverpool RC Cathedral

Good Evening,

Myself and Nick Willasey are preparing some material for Liverpool RC Cathedral, on the history and current condition of their four mechanicaly swung bells. We've had extensive access to the cathedral archives and to the bells themselves but I am searching for a reference I'm sure I have not imagined! My understanding is that the architect, Frederick Gibberd, initially wanted Whitechapel to cast the bells to unconventional shapes which would match the irregular-shaped apertures in the concrete bell tower, as originally conceived in an early design. It was made very clear to Gibberd that this would compromise the tone of the bells beyond belief and he was persuaded to stick with the traditional tried and rested profile. The bell apertures were subsequently reconceived with this stipulation in mind.

Has anybody come across anything to substantiate this anecdote please?

Regards

Bryan McCahey
