From graham at changeringing.co.uk Tue Oct 7 15:18:27 2025 From: graham at changeringing.co.uk (Graham John) Date: Tue, 7 Oct 2025 15:18:27 +0100 Subject: [Bell Historians] False Peal Compositions and Performances from 1911-1919 Message-ID: I have been through the Ringing Worlds from 1911 to 1919 methodically recording all published compositions into Complib. The following referenced performances appear to be false, so should be marked as such in Felstead and Pealbase. I have already added and marked them as false on Bellboard. 1. T:Chesterfield, 10-Jun-1911, 5003 Double Norwich Court Bob Caters by Arthur Knights [performance RW1911-V1/199 composition RW1911-V1/277 bellboard https://bb.ringingworld.co.uk/view.php?id=1887381, reported false RW1911-V1/394] 2. T:Erith St John, 8-Apr-1912, 5088 Waterloo Major by J Armiger Trollope [performance RW1912-V2/279 composition RW1912-V2/261 bellboard https://bb.ringingworld.co.uk/view.php?id=1887155, reported false RW1912-V2/279] 3. T:Erdington, 13-Jul-1912, 5088 Cambridge S Major by J Carter [performance RW1912-V3/36 composition RW1912-V3/54 bellboard https://bb.ringingworld.co.uk/view.php?id=1888964, report false The Compleat Cambridge by Giles Thompson p43] 4. T:Ashton under Lyne, 4-Sep-1915, 5060 Grandsire Cinques by Samuel Wood [performance RW1915-V9/110 composition RW1915/116 bellboard https://bb.ringingworld.co.uk/view.php?id=1887157, reported false RW1944/126] 5. H: Birmingham, 27-Sep-1917, 5005 Stedman Caters by James E Groves [performance RW1917-V12/314 composition RW1917-V12/315 bellboard https://bb.ringingworld.co.uk/view.php?id=1887139, reported false RW1974/90] 6. T: Aston, 15-Dec-1917, 5031 Stedman Caters by James E Groves [performance RW1917-V12/402 composition RW1917-V12/412 bellboard https://bb.ringingworld.co.uk/view.php?id=1887142, reported false RW1918-V13/61] 7. T: Chesterfield, 2-Feb-1918, 5003 Grandsire Caters by George Hollis [performance RW1918-V13/42 composition RW1918-V13/46 bellboard https://bb.ringingworld.co.uk/view.php?id=1887133] 8. H: Birmingham, 4-Apr-1918, 5100 Stedman Cinques by James E Groves [performance RW1918-V13/114 composition RW1918-V13/223 bellboard https://bb.ringingworld.co.uk/view.php?id=1888420, reported false RW1918-V13/293] 9. T: South Croydon, 3-May-1919, 5201 Grandsire Caters by E Maurice Atkins [performance RW1919-V14/166 composition RW1919-V14/171 bellboard https://bb.ringingworld.co.uk/view.php?id=1888870, reported false RW1919-V14/183] Felstead has 1, 2, 4, 6 & 9 recorded as false, but not 3 or 7. Pealbase has 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 & 9 recorded as false, but not 3, 5 or 7. With respect to 5, John Pladdys 1974 letter to the RW reported the composition as false, and provided his own arrangement which has been rung a few times since. He also noted that a peal at Wednesbury on 17-Nov-1917 (RW1917-V12/370) used this composition (although he didn't say how he knew it was the same composition - but might it be Association records rather than an assumption). This Wednesbury peal is also not marked as false in Felstead or Pealbase. I haven't added it to BellBoard yet either. With respect to 7, I can't find any previous report of this composition and peal being reported false. I found many more false compositions without performance references, but have no way of determining whether they have been rung, nor whether the compositions above were rung again.
