I wondered whether there was significance in the dates of the methods 
listed by Richard. A check of the CC collection shows:

Sawston Imperial     	1947
   Queen Imperial       	1958
   Upton Imperial      	1958
   Coslany Imperial    1952
   Oxford Imperial      1959
   Bisley Imperial      1993
   Malvern Imperial    1973
   Llangollen Imperial  ?
   Elmore Imperial       1982

(I did not manage to decipher the Llangollen entry - was it in a 
collectin but not yet rung?)
