No, it's more efficient....

It is compiled, you see Clarrie - just at the last minute, not up front on 
the developer's system. The basic idea is that, the later you leave the 
compile step, the more closely you can optimise the machine code for the 
environment you're running in.

Plus you get platform independence. Seems to too good to be true, eh.
