I think Don is right here. Most ringers think of method ringing as the
broad class. In loose terms that covers coherent sets of rules for what to
do when nothing is called and what to do when something is called.
When I started ringing principles were not methods according to the powers
that be, but ordinary ringers thought they were just methods where all the
bells did the same work. Now the rules are more enlightened and we
officially accept that principles are a subset of methods.
In the same spirit it would be rational to accept that Dixenoids are also a
class of method alonside lead-based methods.
One way to think about it might be to consider Dixenoids as having dynamic
structure and lead-based methods as having static structure. That concept
might have a bearing on the debate about calls that add or subtract changes
as well as substituting them.
