No they were umbrellas.

This whole conversation started with call changes implicitly defined
not by what the (non-)conductor does, but by what the bells
do. Identity changes and all that.

If you would like to change the subject of the discussion, and assert
that it is impossible to have changes rung exclusively by having a
dedicated ringer shout what to do rung silently, then I suspect you
will find few folks disagreeing.
