The variant I have heard is that the tenor was taken off the lathe 
untuned. I'll ask Nigel Taylor for the real story next time I see him.

I used to think the tenor sounded amazing. Beyond clonkety (my 
favourite adjective for old-style). Listen, ye mortals, tremble and 
despair!
