Distorted mp3 bell recordings

Based on some brief experiments last night, I think I have found why 
some mp3 bell recordings are distorted and 'whizzy' and more 
importantly how to cure them. I used a filter (in Cool Edit) to 
bandwidth-limit some recordings before encoding them into mp3 and saw 
a great improvement. Anyone interested in details (and why I think it
