Mention of incised inscriptions occurred about 3 weeks ago, but some recent=
maintenance at Broadway, Worcs, reminded me that part of the tenor's inscr=
iption there is incised around the crown. The inscription reads:
RECAST AT GLOUCESTER BY JOHN RUDHALL A.D. 1828 JOHN RUSSELL AND JAMES STOCK=
FORD CHURCH-WARDENS
The part shown in italics is incised. One suspects the incised part was an =
afterthought by the parish after John Rudhall had recast the bell.
Another more recent example of incised inscriptions is the 8th at Worcester=
Cathedral, recast by Taylors in 1928 from the old Grimthorpe ring. The ins=
cription reads (according to Walters):-
S. PHILIPPVS
THE WORCESTERSHIRE AND DISTRICT CHANGE RINGING ASSN. GAVE ME
Again, the part shown in italics is incised. Unfortunately, this inscriptio=
n is not strictly correct, as DISTRICT should be DISTRICTS.
