The succession of Great Bells at Beverley was:

Old Great Bell, 39-2-15 - believed medieval, recast by Smith 1703
2nd Great Bell, 35-1-4 - Samuel Smith 1703 recast and enlarged 1900 by JT i=
nto
3rd Great Bell, 113-0-21 Ab (later, as Great Bede of Downside, 106-3-4 in G=
)
Great John (the only bell to bear this name), 140-3-1 in G, John Taylor & C=
o 1901

Smith actually weighed his Great Bell at 35-1-10, in 1703: clearly the scal=
es at that time were not so bad!

Okay, Jim - I'll act as your virtual memory on this one. You wrote to the=
RW about Speke and Ditton Hall in 1970, and your letter is in RW 18 Sept.1=
970 p.734.

Ditton Hall are a Blews six of 1878 (hence my interest, and why the refer=
ence wasn't hard to find), inscriptions and diameters 1 St.Raphael (29.5"),=
2 St.Gabriel (32.5"), 3 St.Michael (35"), 4 St.Bartholomew (36.5"), 5 St.J=
oseph (40"), and 6 The Great Mother of God, Mary Most Holy (44.5") - key be=
tween E and F. Hung for ringing, but derelict.

Another earlyish RC ring was the original six - also by Blews, and dated =
1877 - at Leamington. The tenor was 44.25 inches and 14-1-8 (scrapping weig=
ht) - all recast and replaced by the present eight in 1905.

On another matter - Beverley - it's worth reminding people that Canon Nol=
loth's big bells has a worthy predecessor, the original "great John" of 170=
3 by Samuel Smith, weighing 35-1-10 (scrapping weight)=20
