Whilst I have not seen any firm evidence I have heard from more than one 
local source that the steeple at Baldersby St James was required to cap 
that at Ripon, so the spire is taller than the central tower at Ripon and 
the bells are heavier

So some local rivalry may be responsible in this case. However whilst 
Taylors may have had very little say with regard to the weight of the 
bells, they presumably could have advised that the tower was unsuitable 
for housing a full circle ring of this weight.
