Towers collapsing seem to have been one of the hazards of 17th century
ringing, at least in Wiltshire. Calne collapsed twice (in 1628 and 1639)
and St Edmunds Salisbury in 1653. There seems to have been a lot of tower
re-builds prior to the Civil Wars, but how many had collapsed, and how many
were done out of caution, like Warminster, I don't know.
