metal frames

I have visited a tower where the metal frame has been broken by a 
wayward clapper. Whilst it is obviously better to replace the 
casting with a new section, this frame has been drilled and plated, 
obviously at an infinitessimally small amount when compared with a 
new section. All seems O.K. and the bells ring just as well as they 
ever did. What are the disadvantages of the 'cheap' option?
