Since before I first met him Peter Border always used what he called
his "jungle juice". He said that all the ringing he had done over
the years had made his hands too smooth to grip the rope properly.
Ruth still does use it. There is a bottle of glycerine as I write on
the table in the centre of the rope circle at Coventry Cathedral!
Personally I think its use should be restricted to the making of
icing for Christmas cakes!
