Well, if this is right, it certainly casts a new light on two remarkable la=
dies. Apart from them being different, it makes little difference to their=
bells, and doesn't alter the fact that the second one was the mother-in-la=
w of Henry Jordan, the 15th-century London founder (who of course did not c=
ast most of the bells the 19th century writers ascribed to him).

The recent references to Johanna Hille are in a book entitled "Medieval
London Widows 1300-1500". There is a chapter on Johanna Hille and another
on Johanna Sturdy.

Existing bells by J. Hille are quoted as being at Manaton,Devon(2),
Castlethorpe, Norton, Herts, Ipswich, St. Mary at Elms, East Preston,
Sussex and a bell formerly at St. Nicholas, Colchester(which is now at
Basildon).

The will is described as being drawn up 3 February 1441 and proved 30
Mary(May?) 1441 and is to be found in the Commissary register,GL,
MS9171/4,ff.62v-63.
