Harrison was doing it in the 1830s, I think, and there are examples of earl=
ier bells (e.g. Exeter Cathedral 9th) wjhere the bell unintentionally had n=
o canons as the metal ran short.

James Harrison cast bells without canons, but the top of the bell was domed=
, not flat. That idea does not seem to have occurred to him, and the conse=
quent less effort to fit the bell to a headstock. It took others to realise=
this.
