I knew Albert Hughes from 1951 when I first moved to London and he told me
that Cyril J had indicated to the authorities that the 1738 Bow tenor of
Thomas Lester was cracked. On receiving news of this Bert Hughes spent many
hours going over the bell with paraffin and chalk but could not find any
crack in the bell. Thus this noble bell and most of the other Lester and
Pack bells of 1762 were destroyed. They produced the most marvellous and
unique sound as evidenced by the BBC recording. This form of vandalism
could not happen today and it is absolutely right that English Heritage and
CCC exist to prevent this form of destruction. And whilst I am on the
subject the appontment of people on these bodies is no worse than the
appointment of some DAC's. You do not need to have your name in the weekly
peal columns to have a genuine interest in the way forward without
destroying that which is worth preserving.
