The details of the Devonport Chapel bells (DLC 24/7/04) show that they pre-=
date the building of Princetown church by a number of years. One wonders wh=
at did happen to the bells originally intended for Princetown if, indeed, t=
hey were ever cast?
Looking through some ms notes by James Jerram on Devon bells, the following=
is of interest: of the 1 and 2 of the 8 he says: "Cast on the spot under t=
he direction of William Bannister". However, no details of the bells given.=
Pearson's 'The Ringer's Guide to The Church Bells of Devon' says that the =
two trebles were given by local ringers.
Under Devonport St Paul, Jerram says that an ancient bell was brought from =
St Alban's, Worcester in 1851. "It is supposed to have been cast by Thomas =
de Lenne (Lynn)" However, Walters, in his CB Worcs, says that formerly ther=
e were two bells at St Alban's which were sold in 1851 by the architect, J.=
Piers St Aubyn, for the new church at Devonport St James (sic) he was then=
erecting. The bells were sold for =A327. The other and smaller bell is sai=
d to be by Richard Dawkes. 1630. I believe that St Paul's Church, Devonport=
still stands?
