Some time ago I looked into what was going on as far as tuning was concerned
at JT. Being very slow at typing up on to computers was concerned I hadn't
got round to writing anything, so the list of the 1896 tuning book as
provided by ADH has saved me a lot of work. I have annotated it with further
important details as to Taylors thinking. In many cases they were only
recording the nominal, fumdamental (prime in other notations) and hum, but
occasionally (initially) quints and tierces occur. This suggests to me that
they were unsure as to the importance of these figures.
The first complete ring where all 5 tones are noted is of course Norton, so
although less than perfect, they must be the first ring where they attempted
to get everything right. I also include the first few pages of the second
tuning book. It is clear that in this all new bells are being checked and
tuned for all five tones, though with old bells only the main three
(nominal, fundamental & hum) notes are noted.
