A number of architects seem to have little idea when it comes to bells. In
1924, when it was proposed to recast the York Minster bells, the then
Minster architect, the eminent Walter Tapper, objected to the removal of the
gudgeons on the grounds that it would spoil the appearance of the bells. We
can only assume he meant canons, and actually these had been removed from
the old bells during the Warner restoration of 1913, which he had had a
large part in specifying!
