That's possible. Interpreting manuscript accounts can be tricky at 
times, and as I've not seen the originals, I can't say for sure.

P.S. With regards to graphite, my father & I experimented with using 
the powder instead of grease, on the running-boards for the Hastings 
Stays at St James, Trowbridge, when he was Tower-keeper there. The 
extra cost out-weighed any benefits gained.
