"The previous bell by Evans, according to our records at least, 1729"

That is certainly correct. Evans cast four bells for the cathedral in 1729. One survives as the 10th of the ring. The others were the predecessors of the present 3rd, 7th and tenor. The inscriptions from Evans' bells are reproduced on all three of the recast bells. The 3rd (1915) is reproduced in facsimile; the other two (1902) in Taylor lettering.
