[Bell Historians] Monkton

In the Salisbury Diocese it has not been unusual to test the market by
putting a church up for sale and before any of the 'more portable and
valuable' items have been removed. I have known a number of churches to have
been put on the market which, for various reasons, have not sold and then
transferred to The Churches Conservation Trust. In those cases the bells and
other fittings came with the church.

At Monkton the tower is medieval but the rest of the church was rebuilt in
1863. This makes it a very unlikely candidate for vesting in TCCT. I doubt
whether it would have made it when the climate for vesting 'borderline'
churches was rather more relaxed than it is today.

The church is hard by the main A30. I recall ringing there in 1974 and (I
thought) shortly after the rehanging of the bells but in my notes I wrote:
Rehung in a steel frame by Fidler 1976! This could be wrong as the tenor was
cast (recast) by Taylor in 1973. The other bells are by Warner 1868.
Formerly, there were three medieval ?bells. The weights of present ring of
six: 3-2-0; 4-0-6; 4-2-1; 4-3-11; 6-0-23 & 8-2-11. I do not recall the
tonal qualities of the ring.

Neil Skelton.
