Andrew is absolutely right Masham is a Peculiar under the Patronage of Trinity college Cambridge They always choose the vicar and pay for any repairs to the Chancel, cost does not seem to worry them a few years ago they paid to have the lead replaced on the aforesaid roof. It is possible to get married without the banns being said which various vicars have tried out using a special licence.
Aysgarth is also a Peculiar exactly the same as Masham with the same Patronage and same strange financial deal on the Chancel.
As for Middleham it certainly used to be a Peculiar when it was a Collegiate Church. I have just spoken to one of their former Vicars who informs me that Richard the third made it a Peculiar. But these rights of Peculiar were removed in the dim and distant past.
Yours Ian J
