The Claughton bells is important, but it can no longer be claimed that it is the oldest dated bell in England. That honour goes to the bell discovered in the East Riding of Yorkshire by George Dawson - that at Lissett dated 1254

The church is now redundant. Permission has been granted for its conversion into a holiday cottage.

Listed Building Consent was sought from Lancaster City Council for the removal of the two bells. At the time the suggestion was that the 1296 bell would go to Hornby as a service bell and the Luke Ashton one would go to St Peter's Quernmore, where there is a long term proposal for a light ring of bells. However there was local opposition to removing them; the 1296 bell is the most notable feature of Claughton village. So for the moment they are still there.

    Cheetham, Church Bells of Lancashire-
    1. Nicholas Fenwick Esqr. H. Croft. T: Sweetlove Wardens 1727 Luke
    Ashton of Wigan Fecit 18.5"
    2. ANNO . DNI. M.CC.NONOG.V (inverted)1, 21"

The larger bell is England's oldest dated bell 1296.

There are about two pages of text about them.
