Why not finance in a different way.
How about a loan based on scrap metal value less an annual admin cost.
That would be far more attractive than tying money up in an interest
free lone, and potentially raise far more.
It would be risk free for the body getting the funds, and have the
interest of an investment for those contributing.
An admin cost of 2-3% a year would probably cover storage admin and
insurance, somewhat less if someone is prepared to donate sufficient
space for a shed behind a domestic property, where access would make
security a small issue.
 
I would go for owning bells as an investment if my domestic situation
would enable me to have wife and bells on the same property!!
 
Keeping them in a shed behind the garage and bricking up the access
would be secure. 
Not difficult to get them out when needed, but very noisy and
noticeable!
