Despite the number of augmentations there is a decline in the number of
ringing towers.
300 years back there were a huge number of in line 3's or 4's
The loss of 3's particularly since WW2 is dramatic.
An example is Lewes
there were 5 towers with rings, 3's at St John Sub-Castro, St Ann, All
SS, a 4 at St Thomas At Cliff and the still existent ring at Southover.
there is now just the one despite the others being in good towers,
particularly St John Sub-Castro & St Thomas At Cliff.
A rather sad situation as Southover is exceptionally strong having 32
ringers at a Sunday service I recently went to.
All now chimes. The installation, frame included, at All SS was moved to
Poynings when the church was deconsecrated.
