I should have added that John Wallis of Salisbury charged 1/- for bell metal
in the early 17th century, so the price seems to have been fairly stable.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that there was virtually no inflation
in the UK between the seventeenth century and the Great Depression. No
doubt someone can verify this or not.
