This is probably not what many people will want to read but in some
cases there is another option.
It is possible in some larger towers to retain the historic unusable
bell frame including the old bells in their original location in the
tower and still have room for a new frame and bells below. I realise
that this is unusual and it is not an option in many towers but it can
be done and is desirable from the point of view of not just EH but the
church parishioners, the PCC, historians and the local ringers get
their new bells as well. The old bells can be fitted with a chiming
mechanism to give them a useful future function without interfering
with the historic frame or hangings and the bells can remain where
they have been for hundreds of years. The only issues are the external
volume of the new ring, a new ringing floor is required and of course
the finance for the extra work.
