The version of the Temple Church story I heard from the late Charles F 
Andrews of Melksham, was that local lads would flatten pennies by 
placing them between the tower, which swayed considerably, and the body 
of the Church. Again probably apocryphal, although it would have been 
safer than the alternative of placing the pennies on the railway or 
tram tracks, which did happen.
