Many years ago, the Whitechapel bell hanger, Harry Parkes, designed an
ingenious and very simple 'unbreakable' stay, which incorporated just the
sort of mechanism Ted describes, but no one seemed very interested in taking
up the idea.

As Harry put it himself, "ringers are an extremely conservative bunch and
there seems to be no taste for change to something that would make life
easier." Well, that was roughly what he said, but using a rather more
colourful turn of phrase!

Richard

This leads me to wonder whether automatic fail safe stay devices of any
description have been
developed and used. Any ideas?
