Herbert Goakes' family came from March. Michael Goakes, who I remember ringing at St John's, Peterborough, is I believe a nephew or cousin of Herbert. The conversation I recall with Herbert, who at the time was still an active ringer at St Johns ( and who I took over to March practices on occasion, ) was probably in about 1970 (I left P'borough in 1976, before the cathedral bells project was even thought about). Possibly Michael may have memories of similar conversations.

When I lived in the Cathedral precincts the five bells were energetically chimed by one of the vergers before services, using what was perhaps the longest-drafted Ellacombe apparatus anywhere. The tune was 142534152435 repeated rapidly ad infinitum
