I was told that the War Memorial Trust is still actively opposing the 
removal of the bells. Is that information incorrect?

Plainly it is not sensible to suggest alternative schemes to the 
Council while there is still a chance of getting the bells 
out.  However, if they did have to stay in the building then surely 
the very least that could be hoped for would be restoration as a 
(static) clock chime.
