Thank you all for your thorough replies.
One thing I picked up (from the History of the Central Council or was it a Whiting Society book?) was the fashion in Yorkshire for ringing 360 changes each of fourteen methods – there was debate whether this was acceptable as a peal!
Back to my original reason for asking:
The area now covered by the Diocese of Ripon and Leeds had, on its formation in 1836, one peal of 10 (Leeds), two of 8 (Ripon and Knaresborough) and ten peals of six bells. Eight bell peals had been rung in the eighteenth century at Leeds, Ripon and Knaresborough but of the sixes only Masham (1827) and East Witton (1887) had peals rung in the nineteenth century. The remainder of the sixes either had to wait until they were augmented to eight before a peal was rung, or until the twentieth century – indeed the first peal at Aysgarth was not until 1970. (All this according to Felstead database.)
The first peals at Middleham and at Richmond were both closely followed by augmentation to eight.
This lack of six bell peals seems more to do with the culture of ringing in the local area rather than a reflection of peal ringing in the wider area. Six bell peals were being rung but not in the Yorkshire Dales!
Thanks again,
Andrew
PS Racing to get the book written before there is no Diocese of Ripon and Leeds to write about!!!
