This link may be of interest. I recall seeing the programme on TV. My recollection is that the peal boards were incorporated into the design of the house.

Assuming I have the correct place, then it appears the tower was lowered
to foundations and re-built and bells sold.

see this piece (a Word Document) - originally a 5-part article in RW
June-Sept 1983 about the one hundredth anniversary of the creation of
the then Society of Change Ringers for the Archdeaconry of Stafford.

The 159 peals rung at Tipton (1848-1944) are recorded on the Felstead database which is, of course, the starting point for any research on peal records. The entry is actually headed “Lost ring 1964: bells scrapped”. See https://cccbr.org.uk/felstead/place.php?place=tipton

Known as “The Pepperpot” on account of the shape of the tower, Tipton was a popular peal tower. The bells were a Mears six of 1798 (tenor 7-3-26), remodelled and augmented to eight (tenor 12-0-25) in 1848. Five of the bells were scrapped in 1951, the rest some years later. I believe the tower still stands, incorporated in a rather unusual house.

As to Ted Steele’s query re Upper Clapton, the ASCY peal books certainly weren’t destroyed. If the peal was rung for the College Youths then there should be a record of it

I remember going to St Martin’s Church, Tipton about 20 years ago. At that time it was very securely locked and the windows boarded over, but had not yet been converted into a residence. The reason for the disposal of the Bells was the demolition of the “pepper-pot” tower c1950, so the last peal must have been close to the time when the Bells were taken down. As Chris says, five of them were scrapped, but I have a feeling that one was still standing at the back of the church when I visited. There was also a glass peal board – one of the black ones with gilt lettering at the back of the church. This was observed through the one window at the east end where some of the boarding had come away.

The lower part of the tower (ground floor and part of the ringing chamber) were rebuilt, but I understand that the rebuilding was cosmetic only, and never designed to hold a ring of Bells.

There was an article with a photograph of the former tower in a 1960’s RW with a rather amusing account of ringing conditions there, the tower being adjacent to the local gasworks.

I have found to my cost that it can take multiple word searches to find an answer.
A Newspaper search using FindMyPast scored zero.

Searching Bell News and pre 1950's RW's can be very hit and miss.

After Terry Hampton died I went searching Pre PealBase for 44 peals to balance his records and identical word searches were coming up with different answers. The 44 were eventually found but it took time.

The correspondence about Botley and the interesting information that
came from it encourages me to enquire whether anyone on this list can
discover details of the ASCY band that rang a peal of G7 at St. Matthew,
Upper Clapton, Middx. on 6th October 1873; (Felstead).

I have been unable to trace it in any of the records to which I have
access and enquiries I made some years back with ASCY suggested that the
records for the relevant date had been lost in the war. I am beginning
to work on revising a history of ringing at the church and this is now
the only outstanding peal record. I suppose it is not impossible that
the Felstead record is incorrect as all the other peals from that era
appeared in Bell News or Church Bells and some in Bell's Life in London,
so it is odd that this one doesn't show up somewhere.

Any help or suggestions for further search options would be appreciated.

"The correspondence about Botley and the interesting information that came from it encourages me to enquire whether anyone on this list can discover details of the ASCY band that rang a peal of G7 at St. Matthew, Upper Clapton, Middx. on 6th October 1873; (Felstead).

I have been unable to trace it in any of the records to which I have access and enquiries I made some years back with ASCY suggested that the records for the relevant date had been lost in the war."

The peal books were not destroyed, and I even recall seeing this peal - I think - when I was looking through the peal books a few weeks ago to find the first peal in Ireland, which was rung by the ASCY at Waterford Cathedral at around this time. Next time I am there, I will look this out.

Thank you Dickon, I am very much obliged. Also to others who assure me
that the records are not lost. I cannot trace the email (possibly on an
old computer somewhere) but my memory is that Chris Ridley, who was
librarian at the time, sent me a scan of the entry for an 1887 peal but
said that some of the earlier records were lost in the war. IIRC the
inference was that particular entries had become illegible due to damage
rather than that the actual books themselves were totally lost.

I shall be most grateful for anything that is available.

I did come across the Waterford peal during my searches of the
newspapers; it took my eye especially since my maternal ancestors came
from there.

The actual message from Chris Ridley, dated 9th Sept. 2009 was:

"Unfortunately, the CY records from this period were mainly lost in the
Blitz in 1940 so there is little background information readily to hand.
I attach a photo of one peal entry from the CY peal book. Can provide a
photos of the earliest peals if required,"

So perhaps the one I am interested in is not actually among those that
are lost after all.

When submitting historic peals, please be mindful of tenor weights and
places where rings have been replaced.

For instance, this is listed as having the tenor weight as the same the
1952 recast, 41-3-15 in C.
http://bb.ringingworld.co.uk/view.php?id=1200149

whereas at the time, it was 41-0-14 in Bb

Just something else to consider and not intended as a criticism of
submitting these historic peals to work towards a complete and accurate
record.

Best wishes

Thanks for the timely reminder, Sam.

As there's currently no comprehensive database of lost
rings, the best BellBoard can do when you submit a
historical performance -- I'll leave others to decide which
performances are historic and which merely historical -- is
to supply the details of the current ring. In some cases
this will be correct; in other cases, as here, it will need
changing manually.

Earlier this afternoon I imported Dave Kelly's spreadsheet
of 466 lost rings into BellBoard, which means the details of
towers like Tipton, Upper Clacton and West Bromwich will now
auto-complete too. Anyone entering a performance at a lost
tower should make sure they enter the date before the place
name, as auto-completion only lists lost towers where the
bells were removed after the date of the performance: so you
can enter a peal at Tipton in 1930 but not in 1970 as
BellBoard now knows they were removed in 1951.

Also perhaps of interest to those entering old performances
on BellBoard, BellBoard now has an open access policy to
editing old performances. The details of this may change as
we see how it pans out, but at present any person logged
into BellBoard can edit any performance rung before 2004.
This means if there are errors, such as with the weight of
the old ring at Pier Head, anyone can now correct them, and
I would encourage you to do so if you're confident about the
facts. You will also see a link to a version history page
in the footer of the performance so you can see what changes
have been made.

One final feature that might be of interest is that it is
now possible to add annotations to performances rung before
1900. The option to do this can be found on the edit menu
(found by clickon on the pencil icon). The purpose of this
feature is to allow the performance to be put in context,
and for any uncertainty over the details to be recorded.
Generally speaking, I'd rather annotations were used in
preference to footnotes for details that were not included
in the contemporary records. You'll see examples of them on
some of very earliest performances on BellBoard.

It's possible for multiple people to annotate performances,
and if there are different opinions, for example on the
likelihood that the composition was true, do please annotate
the performance to add the competing point of view, but I
don't want it to turn into a general discussion mechanism.

Whilst I wholeheartedly support any move to encourage people
to record peal boards (as well as boards recording other
performances, which often get ignored at the moment), I
don't think it's desirable to start a new database of them.
Such a database will inevitably become yet another peal (or
performance) database, and I would suggest a further
proliferation of them is not in the interest of the
Exercise.

I would encourage anyone recording details of peal boards to
enter the performance on BellBoard (if it is not already
there) and then attach a picture of the peal board. The
open access policy I mentioned a few minutes ago means that
anyone with a BellBoard account can now attach a photo to
any performance from before 2004. If there's a need to add
additional functionality to BellBoard to facilitate this,
I'm sure I can do so.
