[Bell Historians] Rust and the tonal characteristics of steel bells

It has always been my impression that the sound was due to the thickness
profile of the bells. Many I have seen have a constant thickness all the way
down, rather like handbells.

On the other hand those steel bells I have seen in Germany have 'proper'
profiles & sound rather better.

It is often said that the poor tone of Naylor Vickers bells is due to rust -
but I have just completed an investigation into the Bassaleg bells (now in
the Millennium Gallery in Sheffield) that suggests this is not so:

Kind regards (and best wishes to all for 2018),
