Maybe there is something to the Hampshire theory after all. 
The ringer of the 6th was a J Kirvell.  That's a very usual 
name, and the 1871 census only lists one adult with that 
name and initial: a 23-year-old labourer named Jessie 
Kirvell, living in Winchester.  That's hardly any distance 
from the Botley in Hampshire.
