It was Stahlschmidt, of course, who did a vast amount of research in the
medieval records - written up in his Surrey book. That's worth a look too.
George Elphick, I think, in his careful analytical way, tried to draw out
the key points from most of the published histories and then presented a
consolidated summary. Might not be right, won't give all the detail, but
it's still a good starting point.
